Temp Team Tango
Slightly less official, but more immediate, is the formation of the “non-team“, Temp Team Tango. TangoAlpha2.com is coordinating the assembly of a ‘one-time dream team’ for Command Decision’s April 26th “Vietnam Patrol 2008:Khe Sanh”. The point of this team is to enjoy the security of a team protecting your back and using communication and coordination to be more effective in the April scenario. The secondary objective of this temp team is protect all of the over-the-hillweb designers from getting shot. I’ll point them out to you on the field!
Requirements
1) Must Have Your Own Gear (or at least, rent a marker at the event). We recommend camouflage of some sort and a pod harness to carry extra paint into the field.
You may also want to split the cost of a set of two-radios with someone and a headset ear-piece microphone. You can buy a decent set pack of radios at Wal-Mart for as little as $17 a radio and head mikes at Radio Shack for about $20. You can probably find better deals around if you are willing to look adn we have a couple of weeks to get them if you order them online. One thing to look for is if the radio has sub channels for encryption security (or noise dampening), for example a team can use channel 16-2 (standard channel 16 on the walkie-talkie and encryption channel 2). Also check to see if your radio needs a single prong or dual prong microphone headset. Single prong is more common. (Also see our article on Communication for more information about radios.)
2) A Willingness To Work As A Team - this is a must. you’ll need to protect your squad, and them you, as you perform team missions. Communication via radio, hand signals, and just flat out screaming enemy positions are the key to team effectiveness.
3) Ability To Follow Directions - leave your egos at home. We are doing this for fun and competition, but we don’t need any prima donnas. Individual initiative, leadership and combat skills are excellent, but teamwork is about being more than the sum of your parts , blah, blah, blah. Squad leadership can be rotated and everyone’s opinion and ideas are welcome, but sometimes you just have to follow orders (to defend is not as exciting as attacking, but it still needs to be done, Aggression Boy!)
4) Availability to Play on Saturday, April 26th and be AT Command Decisions at 8:30 AM in Taylorsville, NC. Besides getting there, this includes ponying up the field fee ($25 preregistration) and your paint for the day (starts at about $40 per case of field-only paint). The game starts just after 10am and the field opens at 8:30 and we want the team there at 8:30 to get geared up, aired up and signed in and have a team meeting to discuss last minute squads, tactics and review the field terrain and maps. Remember, there may be as many as 400 players there. Do you really want to be still standing in line at 9:45?
5) Attend A MANDATORY Team Practice at X-Treme Tactical Paintball in Waxhaw on Saturday, April 12th at 9am. We have learned from past experience that working and staying together as a team is critical to success at these big scenarios and practicing radio discipline, team maneuvers and tactics as well as learning each other’s strengths and personalities is essential. Only players active on April 12th will be able to play with the team on April 26th. We will also get everyone’s waiver signed that day, as well as collect the money for team registration. We will pre-register everyone as a single team with Command Decisions on April 13th.
6) Be an Adult. At least on the outside. For legal and liability reasons I won’t go into here, we prefer you were over 18 years of age. At some point.
To apply, email me (Paul Metheney), at Paul@TangoAlpha2.com. Please provide your full name, contact info, email address, age, some background on your experience level. I will contact you with more information and add you to the mailing list. We currently have 12-13 players interested in playing on the team. We will probably break this down to three or so (more manageable) three or four man fire teams that will coordinate all together. If you have a 3-4 man squad and prefer to stay toegther, please let me know. The team will be finalized on April 12th.
