Wolf Creek Paintball: A Review

Wolf Creek We played at Children of Men at Wolf Creek  (located 1 mile east of I-73/US Hwy 220, in Star, NC) last year and then again at Clear and Present Danger this year and it’s one of the best fields I have seen.. It’s 80 some acres, heavily wooded, has one of the best forts I’ve ever seen, a house to clear and a village. But it’s the woods that make it. When the leaves are out, the camouflage is killer.

The field is large and there are some choke points, but with some trekking, they can be avoided.

The town that they have, “Hell Town”, really is a town.  It has 10’x10’ buildings side by side that line each side of the road that runs through it.  That town can be fun to hold, take and clear.  Clearing it is not easy, but a lot of fun to jump from building to building clearing them out, if you can.

The house that they have, the “Al Qaeda House”, is also a fun to attack and not easy to hold.  They don’t let you go inside to clear it room to room simply because of the close proximity involved, but I have made it up to the window and shot someone down the hall to the other end of the house and when I got to the door, the remaining came out with their hands up.  Was a funny sight and satisfying!

The fort is the best fort I have ever seen in a field.  It’s an actual frontier-like fort made of shaved wood logs and it has towers on each of the four corners.  It’s back in the woods and takes a hike to get to, so you won’t be picked off from the fort as soon as you enter the field and try and storm it.  Similarly, you won’t be able to always see them coming right away from the fort, but I remember Paul having the eagle eyes from one of the towers and was able to direct fire in the direction of them and sure enough, you’d see the opposing side stand up with their guns in the air.  Most folks actually attack the fort from the front (opposite the door but toward the parking lot) or the side.  The easiest way to take the fort is not actually from the front, but it requires you to circle around it to get to the back due to the way the fort is situated.

Wolf Creek Fieldmap LargeI thought the prices there were comparable to other fields, but not cheap as Rock Hill.  Also, the staff there is very accommodating.  The first time I was out there, I had tank and hopper issues.  The staff actually went to one of the abandoned vehicles on the field, removed a clamp from one of the hoses in the engine of the car and rigged my hopper. I thought that was very cool of them.

It’s a haul to get to the place, but it’s worth the trip, even if just to see how they set up their field.  They do have a couple of teams from the area that play there and seem to dominate the action.  But again, that’s true of most places. One or two of those teams camped out there the night before and had likely 20 or more on the team. At the Men of the Children game, I can only recall one jackass, most everyone else were nice.

Bring your own chairs and I would even suggest your own food. Radios are a must since it is so big and every team out there uses them heavily. Field paint only.

When we spoke with Barry, one of the field owners, he described some of the extensive expansion plans they have for this year building more towns, bunkers and structures.

All in all, this is great field and if it wasn’t such a long drive from Charlotte, it would be one of our regular stops. The refs were professional and responsive, the field is large enough to accomodate a good sized scenario, the prices are reasonable and the owners were open to comments and suggestions. We recommend you try this field for yourself!
